Donated items that are in good, gently used, or new condition make the most impact. Generally, these are the types of items that make the most impact and directly fund our services for Alabamians facing barriers to employment :

  • small appliances

  • china cookware

  • glassware

  • kitchen utensils

  • toys

  • records, tapes, CDs

  • linens

  • jewelry

  • bicycles

  • sporting equipment

  • gently used clothing

  • housewares

  • books

  • furniture

  • lamps

  • knick-knacks

  • radios

  • antiques

  • gently used shoes

  • clocks

In an effort to be resourceful, environmentally friendly, and maximize impact, there are some items we cannot accept. These items include:

  • Items in need of repair, water-soaked or stained items, or items covered in pet hair

    Examples: pet beds/furniture, cat trees, electronics that do not work, furniture with excessive pet dander

  • Flammable items or weapons

    Examples: ammunition, weapons, firearms, fireworks, pesticides, and flammable items

  • Chemicals

    Examples: car batteries, tires, chemical products, gas containers, gasoline, or propane cylinders

  • Building materials

    Examples: air conditioners, carpeting, lumber, paint, plate glass, wooden ladders, windows and doors of any kind, oil, toilets and sinks

  • Oversized items, appliances and electronics

    Examples: pianos, organs, ping pong tables, TV’s manufactured before 2010, console stereos, large copiers, and large appliances like refrigerators, stoves, washer/dryer

  • Mattresses and Electric or Water beds

    Examples: hospital beds, waterbeds, box springs, mattresses, mechanical beds, waterbeds

  • Infant sleepers and seats

    Examples: High chairs, infant carriers, car seats and infant sleepers

  • Other items with safety hazards

    Examples: mirrors without frames, animals, live plants, syringes, medicine, curtain rods, drapery rods, any recalled items that don’t meet U.S. CPSC* standards.

  • Where can I donate my items?

    • There are 2 options for donating, at our Goodwill Stores or at our Goodwill Attended Donation Centers. The Attended Donation Centers accept donations only.

  • How do I donate my items?

    • Goodwill Stores: There is a designated donation area where a team member will assist you.

  • Does Alabama Goodwill arrange home pick-ups?

    • In an effort to maximize impact and best steward our resources, at this time we do not do home pick-ups. We appreciate your willingness to support our mission, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

  • How do I dispose of an electronic that is not working?

    • If you’re looking to dispose of an electronic like a TV that’s broken and no longer works, you can locate a nearby recycler by searching at Earth911.

  • How do I dispose of chemicals, paint, or other hazardous waste?

    • A great tool to find where to dispose of chemicals and more is Earth911.

  • Where do my donations go?

    • All of our donation sites feed into our network of retail stores in north and central Alabama. The revenue generated from these stores is used to empower, educate, and equip your neighbors facing barriers to employment. These barriers may be things like disabilities, age, income, or educational attainment. They may also be things like criminal histories, or life circumstances that have kept them out of the workforce. They are able to receive resources, certifications, and more completely free of charge thanks to your support!
