A Strong Path Forward: Alabama Goodwill Announces Retirement of CEO David Wells and Begins National Search for Successor
Birmingham, AL — June 11, 2025 — Alabama Goodwill Industries (AGI) announces the upcoming retirement of President and CEO David Wells, effective October 31, 2025, marking the close of one of the most transformative eras in the organization’s 98-year history.
Since taking the helm in 2018, Wells has led the organization through remarkable growth, including a 325% increase in revenue, the expansion of its workforce from 110 to 520 employees, and a significant rise in donations, mission services, and job placements. Under his leadership, Alabama Goodwill has not only deepened its community impact but also redefined what’s possible for thrift, recycling, and workforce development across the state.
“Dave had an almost overly ambitious growth vision from the start, but he not only met that projection—he exceeded it,” said Board Chair Kevin Manogue. “He built something extraordinary from the ground up, surrounding himself with a team that shared his passion and values. He’s positioned Alabama Goodwill for long-term success and influence.”
Key achievements during Wells’ tenure include:
Revenue growth from $5.5 million to $23.4 million
Donations increased 762% (from 58,000 to over 500,000 in 2024)
Workforce growth from 110 to 520 employees
Minimum wage raised from $7.25 to $12.00 per hour
Job placements rose to 798 in 2024
Training completions jumped from 140 to over 24,000
Mission services expanded from 270 to over 56,600
Pounds of donations recycled grew from 2.2 million to 19 million
These outcomes have directly improved economic mobility for thousands of individuals, moving many from poverty to lasting careers while promoting sustainability and thrift as forces for good.
“Giving someone a hand up—not a handout—builds dignity and confidence,” said Wells. “I’m particularly proud of our work in sustainability and in becoming a community hub for opportunity and hope. The seeds we’ve sown will continue to flourish long after I step down.”
Wells also spearheaded the creation of Alabama Goodwill Contract Services (AGCS) in 2023, expanding opportunities for individuals with significant disabilities through the federal AbilityOne Program. AGCS now manages five federal contracts for janitorial and warehouse services.
“The AGCS Board ensures accountability and alignment with our mission to provide meaningful employment for individuals facing barriers,” said Brooke Adams, AGCS Board Chair. “David’s leadership has been key in launching and shaping this work.”
To ensure a seamless transition, the Alabama Goodwill Board has formed a Board-led Succession Committee and initiated a national search for the organization’s next CEO—someone who will build on the strong foundation laid by Wells and lead AGI into its next era of impact.
“I leave this role with a heart full of gratitude and pride,” said Wells. “While I may be stepping away from the helm, I will always believe in—and support—Goodwill’s mission.”
